Data Centres

How a data centre works DNA IT

With words such as flexible and scalable, a data centre solution should be tailor made to fit your requirements. Storage should be cost effective with you only paying for what you need, when you need it. Welcome to this introduction to data centres brought to you by DNA IT Solutions. This guide is one of a series that we hope will be useful to give you an insight into what you can do to help make the right IT decisions.

What is a Data Centre?

A data centre is more than a facility used to house computer systems it can be the brain of company. Most critical processes are run in the data centre so it is important that your choice of data centre meets your requirements. A data centre houses servers, storage devices, cables and a connection to the internet and allows your IT infrastructure to function efficiently.

We have come a long way in the past 80 years from when a single computer would fill a complete room. In the modern office today our IT equipment is more powerful than ever. In any sizeable organisation there is a need for a dedicated area to store and manage the IT hardware. In smaller businesses that may result in a ‘server room’ within the building itself or as a company grows it will evolve to using an external data centre.

The Brain of the Business

This data centre facility will be the place where the organisations IT operations are centralised. It will be a place that stores and manages data that is crucial to the day to day workings of the business. A data centre will provide a cloud solution for the organisation where they can run systems and store data with great flexibility and scalability. It really is the choice for the modern enterprise with ambition for growth.

Secure

The security of the data centre will be of concern and that is why we only offer solutions that are tried and tested and up to our high standards. The right environment must be in place to protect from theft and ensure protection of hardware.

The building itself must be secure and well protected to prevent unwanted visitors. It should provide an environment that has proper cooling systems in place to prevent overheating and keep temperature and humidity at consistent levels. Data centres need great power to operate and systems in place should power fail. We would also expect procedures in place for natural disasters such as fire, flood or storm.

There will be critical hardware and software on the premises so backups are vital. We would expect the onsite team to have both the expertise and the experience to perform the tasks necessary.

Technicians and maintenance staff will need access to the server rooms but that should be tightly controlled. Security systems that include biometric access, perimeter control and video surveillance systems will be standard in the data centres. An effective data centre will have invested in both the facility and the equipment housed to ensure a robust security system.

High Standards

Standards need to be high for a modern data centre and it would be expected to provide:

Always Available

Organisations need 24-hour access to information for 365 days a year. Downtime is not an option for most business so we should expect Uptime to be over 99% and as near to 100% as possible. A company needs its IT systems at all times so it is vital that there is guaranteed availability of cloud applications running in the data centre. This level of performance is both expected and achieved by the partners we work with.

Power Uninterruptible Power Sources including battery banks and generators should be in place in the event of a power failure occurring. The UPS will ensure that the power remains constant without any breaks. It will compensate for fluctuations in voltage and frequency and protect the sensitive computer electronic components and systems. Data centres will also have a redundant power supply. This enables repairs on one network without having to turn off servers, databases, or electrical equipment.

Environment

Data centres need the correct internal environment control. This includes computer room air conditioners, heating, ventilation, air conditioning and exhaust systems. The many processors and electronic components will naturally generate heat and if this is not dissipated there is a danger that they could fail. The correct cooling equipment must be in place to prevent this and the power to run this is considerable. Normally the cool air is blown through holes in the floor and it flows around the racks in a measured way to counteract the heat from the servers. The warm air is then removed by the air conditioning system

Equipment

A data centre will be a building filled with equipment and that hardware should be of a high quality and fit for purpose. Equipment for IT operations and storage of the organisation’s data including servers, storage hardware, cables and racks. It should be of the correct specification and kept up to date and properly maintained. The operations team within the centre will physically monitor operations at all times.

Hybrid

Sometimes an organisations needs are a little more complex and this is where hybrid can be the solution. A business can now put in place a combination of third party, cloud based and on-premises services that are flexible. Different data can be deployed depending on what the organisation needs and certain data can be given extra layers of security. Again, this is flexible and can move and change as the business develops.

Modern Enterprise

As technology moves on and data centres evolve there is a need for knowledge to make the right decisions for a business. With growth being the main objective of most businesses, having the IT infrastructure can be an enabler to access new markets and launch new products.

Shifting from an on premise situation to a multi-tenant data centre can seem like a daunting prospect but that is where we come in. How can Cloud help my Business?

How can cloud help my Business DNA IT Solutions

Are you planning your business strategy for this year?  This is the time of year that we look back at what kind of year the business has had and consider what improvements can be made.  We also then take a view of where we would like to be in 12 months’ time and try to put a plan in place to get there.

Planning Ahead

You may now be looking at cloud as an option for your business but are unsure of the costs and time involved.  The good news is that cloud allows you the flexibility to take what you need and only pay for what you use.  The beauty of being able to scale up or down as required in a quick efficient manner is what makes cloud so attractive.

You don’t need to be one of the ‘big guys’ anymore to consider cloud.  It allows you to integrate technologies even as a smaller player that without cloud you would need considerable budgets and advanced infrastructure.

Innovation

If you have the idea, then maybe cloud will allow it to become a reality.  Innovation becomes a reality with cloud as certain barriers will disintegrate.  Allowing you to access new markets, launch new products and services as you see fit.  Cloud also allows you to automate certain functions within the business.  This will save time and the resources can be pointed towards other more profitable activities.  Cloud can improve workflows and free up time that was being spent on manual processes.

Backups

What would you do if your system crashed, or you were hacked or a natural disaster destroyed all your current information?  Do you have a reliable backup?  Cloud allows a secure place where a backup can be held off site, the peace of mind this brings can be priceless.  Cloud allows for secure information sharing and helps with data protection regulations on the storage of data.

With fixed monthly costs and no major investments in new servers even your financial manager will be happy.  Think about getting your comms room back and use it for something a bit more inventive.

A new year will bring new opportunities, maybe cloud is that opportunity for your business.  Talk to DNA IT Solutions about transitioning to the cloud today.

Come on a Digital Journey with IBM Cloud

A Digital Journey with IBM Cloud DNA IT Solutions

DNA IT Solutions recently hosted a breakfast seminar, in conjunction with IBM (last Thursday 6th September) – I thought I would share some thoughts and insights from the day.

IBM ThinkSpace

Not with-standing the rain and a shunt on the M50, we welcomed over 50 guests to the Innovation centre at IBM Damastown. For those visiting the IBM Campus for the first time it was very much a case of “Who Knew?” Damastown is an impressive campus employing over 600 people, playing host to the European Cloud team, and clearly one of Dublin’s best kept secrets!

We heard first from IBM with an overview of their expansive cloud offerings, suitable for all sizes of organisation. There is a perception out there that the IBM Cloud offering remains big cloud for big business. We need to remove that myth.

DNA IT & IBM Relationship

The reason DNA IT have this relationship with IBM is to take enterprise grade IT Cloud Services to our customers – regardless of their size. Our heritage has always been a very business lead mindset where first and foremost we must spend the time educating clients on their strategic options and then planning real execution. We put the time and effort on the ground with clients to help them understand their needs.

The reality is that all business expectations have dramatically changed in recent years with an ‘always on’ mentality, flexibility of working, access to real time data and intelligence, emphasis on security etc.etc. … these are the things that are driving business and this demand is what is driving an appetite to leverage innovative cloud facilities and applications.

What DNA IT do is to assist organisations to access these key technologies in an innovative way to deliver on their business objectives. As you can see the options available are enormous and this brings its own challenges. So, we start with the business need, understand the objectives and then we bring in the experts to architect the desired result.

Blue Insurance

David Moore, CTO, Blue Insurance, then took us through his own Journey to the Cloud and his experience of working with DNA IT Solutions as his partner to get there.

His authentic story of how IT has progressed since the early days of Blue Insurance to the cloud-based service it utilises today resonated extremely well with the audience. He needed to show that IT could deliver on an aggressive business plan, be able to scale quickly as the business grew and all this whilst minimising risk and becoming increasingly security focused. They are still on this Journey but confident of success with a trusted partner onboard.

Strategic Overview

Both were then followed with a strategic overview from DNA’s own Principal Cloud Solutions Director, Declan Hussey, who talked about the value of finding the right technology partner.

There’s an old adage…. If you don’t know where you’re going any road will take you there.

Our advice to clients is to always start out with the end in mind. This is a statement that you will hear engineers say over and over, but now business leaders need to listen. Like never before, the demand is massive in areas of security, properly designed IT systems, resilience and overall excellence. A comprehensive plan is fundamental to delivering on business expectations.

DNA IT Solutions put huge stock in the first phase of the journey being all about the business, understanding the needs, the challenges and so on and getting all key stakeholders bought in. Then we can deliver innovation, acceleration and excellence.

We have clients come to us regularly migrations gone wrong (Not just cloud!). The key failures are easy to identify, and it boils down to a lack of planning and poor execution. This can be avoided if the right partner is selected in the 1st instance and a proven model of deployment is followed.

As I reflect I can say I took three main messages away from the day;

1.     IBM, the best kept secret in the Cloud space in Ireland – have an excellent, comprehensive cloud offering in the market, suitable for business of all sizes

2.     Moving to the Cloud is a journey not and event, cloud can bring significant benefits to business but its not a case of simply migrating everything in a big bang approach

3.     Find a partner that takes time to understand your business and who can then provide the best advice to deliver the solution your business demands

If you would like to hear further insights and support for your journey to the cloud, we would love to hear from you.

Paying too much for storage?

Paying too much for storage_ DNA IT Solutions

Are you old enough to remember cassette tapes in cars?  Or renting out a VHS tape from the video shop in the town?  If you are not, ask your dad!  There’s a reason the younger generation will laugh at the idea of tapes with the technology that is around today.

Tape Backup

There are still many businesses that will do a tape backup when it comes copying data. Tape backup involves copying data from a primary storage device and storing it on a cartridge.  These tapes are then placed in a safe place and can be used should there be a system failure or loss of information.  Many are done manually and can involve arranging downtime while the backup is being done.

Costs

While this might be a fine solution for smaller business, many others are moving away from tape management for a variety of reasons.  The high volume of data generated means it is becoming more cumbersome and time consuming to use this method.  The option of cloud storage is becoming more and more attractive.  This is an option which is relatively low cost and highly scalable which is a very attractive combination.  The added benefit of being easy to change to this method and integrate into the existing system is welcome.

Data Storage

Keeping data for 90 days should be the norm and anything older than this should be archived.  Using short term storage for old information is a waste of resources.  Long term archive storage is cost effective and ideal for data that has to be kept for many years such as patient data.   If you use short term storage for everything it is costing you too much money.  Cloud storage is limitless and cost effective in comparison.

Cloud object storage allows the storage of data sources such as video, audio, mri scans, xray files, all of which can be archived.   All this flexibility and endless storage options are why many organisations are making that move towards cloud storage.

IBM Cloud Object Storage is an unstructured data storage service designed for durability, resiliency and security. Get your data to the cloud faster, analyse it in place and archive it for less.  For more information on IBM Cloud you can speak with DNA IT Solutions.  As a cloud partner with IBM we can offer tailor made solutions for your business.

Should we fear the cloud?

Should we fear the cloud DNA IT Solutions

Cloud can be seen as a risk or an opportunity by an organisation depending on their experience and knowledge.

While cloud has been around for some time and used by many large global companies it was often not accessible to the masses.  However, it is only in recent years that it has become more accessible to small and medium enterprises.

Risk or opportunity?

When weighing up the pros and cons of anything you have to take all the information that is available and decide what is relevant.   Once you have the knowledge only then can you make an informed decision.

Security Threats – old threats in a new environment

Let’s take an example to help us evaluate if the cloud gives us opportunities.  When we look at the risk of a data breach we will immediately start to imagine real business costs emerging.  The loss of information will cause downtime which in turn is a business cost.  However, the real cost could be loss in reputation which results in loss of clients and even bigger financial losses.   This risk was always in existence, even before the cloud came on your agenda.

Attacks on cloud are less likely than on traditional data centres or internal systems.  With cloud you have ways to help you increase security with innovative approaches designed to detect threats long before they threaten your enterprise.

Hackers are still operating in the same space as before but now they are coming up against more sophisticated cloud based security systems.  With data that is encrypted throughout its cloud journey this threat is lessened when the cloud is the solution.

Data Loss

Data Loss is where a company mislays or accidentally deletes information that is still critical to the business.  In this case it is usually human error or it can happen when a file gets corrupted.  In the past when a laptop was stolen the data contained within was lost forever, however, now with data stored in the cloud all is not lost to the business.  Plus, the files on the laptop will be encrypted so are useless to any would be criminal.

File corruption can be prevented by improving endpoint security options and email that is filtered protects users.  There are so many more security options available when the cloud is part of your IT infrastructure.

IBM Cloud is enterprise grade dedicated private cloud available to businesses in Ireland today.  DNA IT Solutions are one of a handful of partners in the market today that can offer your business this valuable solution.  If you are looking for added protection in the cloud market, don’t fear it, talk to us instead.

Why choose IBM Cloud?

why choose IBM Cloud DNA IT Solutions
